Why playing online is so expensive?

I think a backgammon site: with a low rake: that was proactive in identifying cheating; that prohibited bot play; that ran tournaments for all level players; that held qualifiers for national and international events; that made a contribution to the education and community of backgammon players who frequented it, would generate a ton of business.

Whether that would be enough business to generate a sufficient profit remains to be seen, but I believe if all of the above were delivered, the site would be successful, with proper marketing.
