I don't think blocking your opponents 6's has much to do with this. I think the key is to clear the 6-point because you have a stripped 5-point. Yes, you can block 6's, but you are not ready to bear off, so this is a wash, more or less. The choice is whether you want your spares on the 6-point, with a stripped 5-point, or not.
