There is a rule of thumb though I don't know how to express it per usual. Basically the weaker your opponent's board is and the less entering numbers that safety his currently exposed extra blot there are, the more apt you are to hit immediately instead of just extending the prime naturally and taking the win.
This makes sense because you'll have more chances to pick up the second checker and when you do get yourself in trouble having not picked up the second checker your opponent's board will be in a weaker state so that while you carry out the attack of that checker any hit backs by your opponent won't be as strong.
