Hitting now won't win, with your 4 point board and 4 checkers back and semiprimed. Most likely, he'll escape and you'll crash. That's why 23/17 is so important in the first position -- you need to free that runner, whether or not it gets hit. Instead, plan to make a 5 point board and hit a blot left on the bar point or 6 point. There's probably a very good chance of both of those happening, and if they do, you'll have a much better chance of winning than if you hit now.
