Daily Quiz 1/18

Problem 1 From Stick's GV article on Pottle's Rule "If ahead in the race and the other candidate plays are nothing special I've found that it is almost always right to run out into a double shot...." The score seems to put even more emphasis on that since racing is a higher priority GP at DMP. 24/15
Problem 2 Clearing the midpoint (making the five prime and adding a builder) doesn't do enough with this fortuitous opportunity. Either cover the barpoint (securing the 5-prime) and split off the anchor -- giving opp 16 hitting rolls -- or just make the 2-point leaving opp on the bar 70% of the time. The cube location means Blue should be trying to work towards an efficient cube turn. It would help to know your cube prospects when White fans (in both scenarios). (I don't.:( But creating extra volatility when homing in on a cubeturn can often be overkill, at best. 2(2)
Problem 3 Ought to have a ref. pos. for these kinds of games.... Everything appears biased in Blue's favor here. Besides Blue's 4 pip lead for being on roll, White has more wastage and more outside land to cross. Blue has the better homeboard EVEN if he is forced to break this turn. White has a blot to clean up if he does hit an immediate shot. White does have the advantage of Blue being the first to break with a six but that isn't as valuable as usual because of the HB blot. White is in more gammon danger than Blue (although not a lot). Finally White won't get standard value from cube ownership at this score. Sounds like the question is more about the take decision than the double decision, the way I've framed it. The fact that Blue can't take full, simultaneous advantage of race equity and contact equity ought to swing things if the take is otherwise close. D+T
