I didn't mean that match equity understanding wasn't important but that you can get through a surprising lot of it w/out racking yourself. Of course I'd rather know a MET, be able to calculate OTB the risk v. reward, gammon prices, all that other bullshit...but I think I have a decent 'feel' for things. Maybe I'm delusional. In our OLM for example, this past game, bearoff decisions where I had to ask myself "should I be ripping and tearing taking the almost sure gammon or is the extra minor risk worth the extra points when I win a backgammon?" I ripped because I was behind in the match and realized it would pull me barely ahead instead of being barely behind. Even I could assign more #s to that equation but I didn't think there was a need, I ripped, bots agreed with me. Now if you ask Neil you'd get a completely different and more accurate explanation but we both came out with the right answer. Would I like to have Neil's understanding? Of course ... How much can feel/common sense make the correct decisions? I'm finding a surprising amount of the time.
