I first read the phrase, “coming under the gun,” in Paul Margiel’s seminal work Backgammon. As I recall, it was explained precisely in the section where he discusses the difference between a non-builder, an active builder and a semi-active builder. All can be within direct range of a target point. Admittedly, I am a bit hazy, and since I don’t have the text with me today, I am just working from memory.

Of course, I should have written, “three (or more) different points.”
