Most times it is fast because the images are already cached on your system after the first time they are retrieved from the server. It can be slower (and yes that is relative) the first time you load a diagram from a new site (or just cleared the browser cache). But overall I almost never notice it.

But Xavier is right it does take up additional bandwidth and time to retrieve all the smaller images.
