types of dice

The cost is irrelevant to the casinos. With a vigorous toss, the square corners dig in and lead to the randomness they want. Given the angle of the toss, my guess is that backgammon style (rounded edge/corner) precision dice would be more likely to skid and keep their orientation, leading to less randomness.
Furthermore, regarding casinos you've got a lot of closed-minded experts. "That's the way we've always done it...." Note they haven't changed the rules (AFAIK) to stop the recent wave of dice mechanics. (Admittedly the evidence is slim that this works.) Go back to the 1960's. It took them a while to realize that people were gaining from card-counting, and probably mainly from the gross receipts evidence. Although if you read Thorp's recent books (actually Fortune's Formula authored by Poundstone but featuring Thorp among others), you'll find they actually started banning players a lot quicker than most of us thought.
