My initial thought when seeing this problem is that the big racing disadvantage for blue makes it anti-thematic to run, and hence that 22/13 should be discarded. As I understand, the theme of not racing when behind may not apply to this position?

My play would be 13/4, btw. Keeping a lone checker on the mid will prevent white from playing one checker at the time without leaving direct shots. Being hit is not good of course, but only because blue might be stuck on the bar and not getting to shoot at blots while white is bringing them home. Being put further back in the race doesn't really count since blue is so far behind already. Didn't even consider damaging blue's board with 5/1 or 6/1, the contender to 13/4 for me was 13/8 13/9.
