Not sure if this is an idea from the article, but:
EMG normalization may miss the mark in terms of making similarly sized conceptual errors comparable across different scores because of the variability of cube leverage and gammon prices.
In your match play example, the cube leverage is extremely high, by which I mean the following: With a centered cube, the difference between winning and losing a single game is approx. 25%. After the cube turn, another cube turn will follow and the difference is then 100%. The cube leverage is then 4, compared to a bit more (due to recubes) than 2 for money.
The most striking example of EMG distortions is DMP with its small error sizes - no cube leverage, and gammon prices are zero.
