With a stacked mid-point and no checkers back, 6s become a problem for opp. If you split to the 18, 6s hit. If you do not move to the 18, 6s will play much worse.

This theme occurs frequently (and in various guises) if you have escaped back checkers and have a stacked midpoint - often when given a choice, making the bar (in White's case here) is a big improvement because it creates a landing spot for 6s. See also the 11 problem Paul posted recently.
