PR and Winning: Naive Question

In Response To: PR and Winning: Naive Question (RobertFontaine)

The rule that I follow as an intermediate/advanced player in tournaments against other intermediate/advanced players is "Don't get gammoned on a 2-cube and lose 4 points." As a result, I drop many gammonish cubes that technically are takes. I don't care what it does to my PR. My thought process is that I don't play well enough to take every cube that an expert would take, so I'm more likely than the expert to lose a doubled gammon. It's very difficult to win a 7 or 9 point match when you've lost 4 points in one of the games. In addition, because I'm playing against other intermediate/advanced players, whatever equity that I lose by "incorrectly" dropping will be balanced out at some point in the match when my opponent makes the mistakes that all intermediate/advanced players will eventually make. (Conversely, when playing against an expert in a side event, I'll err on the side of doubling too early.)
