Good points, Bob.
Adding to 2), an expert playing a lesser player can sometimes correctly decide to pass close or even not so close equal-player takes. But that's because his skill advantage means passing isn't as costly as it would be against an equal opponent. He can technically give up equity and count on superior skill to recover. Even so, the expert has to make this adjustment with extreme caution. The intermediate/advanced player playing similar opponents can't count on the expert's skill advantage to recover from giving up free points.
That said, Robert's comment:
The rule that I follow as an intermediate/advanced player in tournaments against other intermediate/advanced players is "Don't get gammoned on a 2-cube and lose 4 points."reminded me of a Flint Backgammon News tournament report a few years ago. There may have been more nuance, but what I recall is that the Giant author said that his goal going in to the tournament was to lose no gammons. I think it worked out for him, that time.
