HiGoneFive: ... just pick them up, and let it fall on the first inclined plane of the baffle box.

As a kibitzer at Ken’s local match, I noticed that players sometimes dropped the dice into the box without being sure that they hit the first baffle. It was obvious that no one was trying to cheat, however, and even when the first baffle was missed, the dice tumbled sufficiently to convince me that the result was random.

Neverthess, I think there should be a requirement not to bypass the first baffle. Here is where the design of the box might be improved. Why is it even possible to skip the first baffle? The top should have an opening that exposes only the first baffle. The current design has no top at all. It is wide open, and you can easily drop the dice in without hitting the first deflector.

As to the use of cups, I must go with those posting here. Their experience shows that cups are necessary. At Ken’s local tournament, however, it was obvious that nobody tried to cheat. I watched the dice drop from hand to baffle box many times, and never had even a hint of concern that the result was not random. In fact, Ken’s technique was just as HiGoneFive suggests: both dice exposed, held only by his fingers, and then gently released above box.
