Baffle box rolling procedure

3. It is simpler to not use a cup, just pick up the dice and toss them in the baffle box. There were no mistakes in rolling without using the baffle box this way.

Jason: No way. Cups, or no baffle box. This is nonnegotiable.

If you can't depend on the baffle box to produce random rolls, then what is the point of using one? It seems to me that one of the advantages of using a BB is that you don't need to use cups.

The second advantage is that it makes it easier to tell what is a legally acceptable roll. The (non BB) rule states: "A legal roll consists of shaking the dice vigorously in a dice cup and then simultaneously tossing them out at a discernible height above the playing surface, allowing them to bounce and roll freely."

How much is "vigorously"? What does "simultaneously" mean? What is a "discernible height"? Who decides if the dice bounced and rolled freely? (Sometimes, just because of the funny way a die lands, it will stop without rolling. Does that mean you have to reroll?) These questions can be reduced or eliminated with a baffle box.

My suggestion is to not use dice cups with a baffle box. Instead, have both players use the following procedure when rolling the dice:

  1. Pinch the two dice horizontally between your thumb and forefinger (thumb, die, die, finger).
  2. Hold the dice in this way an inch above the top of the baffle box.
  3. While keeping your hand steady (not moving up or down), release your grip on the dice so they fall together into the baffle box.
