and I didn't think the 2-pt gap would hurt so much as to cause the position to swing all the way to no double.

Well, it's nearly a third of all rolls after which you will be cubed out. So if you thought you would have about 80% without the gap, then you're a lot closer to even money all of a sudden (you also get another chance to miss if you roll an ace).

And it being a recube hurts you even more, since you'll be throwing away the 20+% chance you would have had after a miss.
