Ben,
It takes courage to say what you've written here at the bottom. I commend you you for it. Now you can start a fresh chapter in your backgammon endeavours.
Personally, I too reached a crossroad in my own game and needed to know whether I was any good or just fooling myself. I know my wife can read my BS from three miles away and perhaps others could too. Who knows! Maybe they still can!
My point being, I decided to do something about it...here comes the plug: I took lessons. I cannot reiterate enough the importance of lessons; they are a must for any aspiring player looking to break through into the ranks where the big guns sleep eat and breathe.
I fully recommend Phil as your first port of call; he's a wonderful teacher. I graduated with honours with Phil and curently at a sticky wicket with Mr Stick. Here, you will learn what is it like to undergo a labotomy. His insightfulness is truly remarkable! My lessons with Stick are ongoing, that is until the student can go toe-to-toe with the pro - you know.
The best piece of advice I can offer is this: you'll find it tough going doing it alone!
Send me an email! Two heads are always better than one.
