I don't think I misunderstood you, but thanks for clarifying. My question was directed at Tom, not you. Maybe that was confusing since it followed my quoting you.

Your point then is that a not-necessarily-perfect baffle box with cups is better than cups alone, right? I agree.

A further point you mention:

then I must accede to not using cups if they so wish.

(a) Apparently that is so in the BIBA tournaments that you play in. (b) It's not clear that ABT Rule 4.1 "Alternatively, players may roll legally by casting both dice simultaneously through a baffle box" is an alternative only to the "casting" procedure described earlier in the rule, or to the cupping, shaking and casting procedures. (c) WBF rules mandate cups if a baffle box is used.
