Unfortunately your #1 is the way those who seek to try to produce less than random rolls from a baffle box usually hold the dice.

At the very least one should shake the dice in the palm of his/her hand while moving towards releasing them into the box. This was often requested/demanded of players at the Cavendish West. But still some players would "forget".
