Repairing illegal moves in non-clocked play

Today I moved a 5 instead of 6. I apologized for moving incorrectly, slid the checker over to the next point, he rolled and the game continued. It would never occur to me that I should have to find my dice, set up the previous roll, place the dice back on to the table, and then slide the checker over to the next point. What a lot of crap to have to go through when the problem is so quickly and painlessly solved by my simply agreeing that I had erred and correcting it.
There are many things about backgammon to get worked up about...like not shaking dice, fast rolling, not keeping score, making snide remarks, eating over the board, talking while I'm thinking or counting pips, chatting with friends in the middle of the game, taking too long a break, continuously throwing the dice on the floor, taking far too long to make a move, taking too many pictures or writing down too many positions, being late, moving the checkers back and forth and back and forth, not putting the checkers squarely on the points, fiddling with the dice when it's my turn, touching my dice and my checkers, picking up their own checker when I hit it, and on an on. Why get uptight about something that is a) harmless; b) meaningless, and c) to address you point exactly, I know of no place in any rules or guide that says that when someone corrects an illegal move they must put the dice back on the table. That is simply YOUR PERSONAL thoughts about how it should be done, and to "assume" that everyone else should also have those values is a little presumptuous. Now, if you post had addressed ANY ONE of the other issues I listed, I would be completely with you.
