Taking a principled stand on clocks

As always, Jason, you take a courageous but principled path.
Clocks in backgammon are not the wave of the future... they are the present. I am a part of a new generation of players who feel much more comfortable playing WITH a clock.
There is a clear trend in the last five years, where clocks, once a novelty and a feared thing, are now mainstream in backgammon tournaments. A very large number of tournaments are clocked (in the Open division). A large majority of players now are comfortable with clocks, or at least aren't UNCOMFORTABLE.
In the US we now seem to have all three parts of the spectrum in ABT Open events: clocks required, clock on request of either player, and clock (only) by mutual agreement. There has always been a general concern about insufficient pool of clocks for required rules, but that is why request is such a good compromise. Still we have a few holdout directors who, for whatever reason, default to mutual-request. Have they told us why?
