"1) the legal play is obvious. You make it. You can say you finish, but in any case your dice are already up, so you have indicated your play is finished. You can also say "Sorry, your turn", which I think would be polite and nice."

That seems to be clincher, "the dice are up", whereupon any legal correction of the misplay should be deemed to complete the move with or without verbal or other indication.
