Jason's way of doing it to me is no doubt the correct and proper way to do it. As with many of the things in backgammon that you mention, we are more lax in how we go about correcting the issue depending on the situation in question. It would seem almost ridiculous in a chouette to insist people place the dice back on the board especially when the correction is such an obvious one. If a non obvious correction came up in match play though, it would be the same level of ridiculous not to have the opponent put the dice back on the board to avoid all the possible pitfalls others have mentioned.
