Steve Hast: Main event play was completed by 5 pm Sunday. How? By having a tournament staff actively making sure matches did not take an unduly long time.
I think you misunderstand my reasons for wanting to play with clocks. Keeping a good pace is SECONDARY to hugely improved mechanics.
Steve Hast: You talk about wanting to improve backgammon but do not wish to support one of the few BG tourneys that goes out of its way to get beginners and novices to attend.
You wrote something incorrect there: I *do* wish to support the Pittsburgh tournament, and will continue to do so. I will tell anybody who asks me that they should attend Pittsburgh, and that it will surely be a good tournament. Not attending is not the same as not supporting. When I go to a tournament, I am going to play, not to support a tournament.
Steve Hast: Based on the attendence at my tournaments, IN THE PAST BG players have not felt them to be REQUIRED.
This is a logical fallacy. Your tournaments are probably well attended because you do a good job of running and marketing them.
Steve Hast: If you can not play in my tourney, then to improve the game and to help get more players tournament ready, come to Pittsurgh and run the Beginner activites throughout the weekend.
In order to not get it buried, I've made an offer to you and many other tournament directors, and have posted it to a new thread.
Steve Hast: Jason, check around, ASK , how many BG players have had a "bad" experience at one of my tournaments.
I'll bet anything it's almost nobody, and anybody who has had a "bad" experience is probably a BG crank. I have not heard one bad thing said about you and your tournaments -- on the contrary, I hear nothing but great things.
Neil Kazaross: I don't expect to play too many more Open events that aren't clock manditory.
Not quite a boycott, but close.
Ken Bame: our local club tournaments went to clocks mandatory in the open. Attendance has been up and the tournaments have been finishing earlier.
Good for you, and this is one more data point in favor of the use of clocks.
Steve Hast: If the attendence in Pittsburgh at Labor Day is too low, the players will have voted and I will cease holding the event, as i am not offering what they desire.
If too many players join my boycott, will you change your format, or just close up shop? If you are truly open to change, then you would. So... would you change your format if you find that a lack of clocks is hurting your attendance?
Taper Mike: To my surprise, the thing I liked best was that the dice remain down after my opponent plays. That alone has motivated me to repeat the experience.
There you go, another player who thinks that the improved mechanics is where it's at, not the time aspect.
Steve Hast: i could be convinced to make Clocks mandatory for Doubles and the Masters JP.

Steve Hast: IN SPEAKING TO many CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER PLAYERS OVER THE PAST 2-3 YEARS , the Consensus is that there is NOT a consensus..There is a group of players that feel Clocks need to be mandatory, there is a group of players that will NOT play in tourneys that require clock usage and there is the rest - using clocks because they are beign required to, but some number of these players would NOT use clocks if given a choice and some would...That is the way it is
Then my "boycott" won't matter much. I'm one person -- a drop in the bucket. Don't worry about me.
