Nactation — F alone is the best symbol for fanning.

While I agree with your well-demonstrated point, I think it applies specifically to the beneficial uniformity of early game sequences that are likely to be searched for and/or rolled out. I would say the same (on the first few rolls) for using 41S rather than 41Z, and 62$ rather than 62O, and 32T instead of 32d when adding a fourth or subsequent checker to the 8pt, and many others (some of which are not yet standardized, such as 62S-21H and 62S-62D -- or should they both be D, or both H?)

I haven't always used F instead of 31^ (for example) in recording games, but I have always preferred F for early game rollout files, such as xxx-55A-F-C. As long as I can remember, other people have as well. Perhaps in part they are following the lead of early nactators such as Stick and myself, but mostly I think people have good common sense on this issue (for fanning anyway -- less so for other situations).

Once past the first few moves, the "best" choice of character(s) seems more subjective, more a matter of application or preference/style. As one example, if Storm sees Nactation more as a vehicle to record games than as an opportunity to exchange opening rollout files with matching names, he might feel aesthetically pleased to see his three-character roll+play designations vertically align in multi-row text. As another example, some readers might want to know the fanning (or partially fanning) roll so that they can second guess -- rabbit hunt variations that might have been (sometimes to the displeasure or contempt of those more rational!)
