Purpose of clocks - an alternative to CONSIDER

Here is a story:
Last year, at warm up tournament in Novi I was waiting for two players to finish their match. I had to play the loser of that match. It was getting very late, but one of the players was moving very slowly. It seemed to me like this match would never end. Eventually a winner was decided and CJC told to the other player to start his match with me. It was already very late, thus he replied that he would rather forfeit his match than play with me that day. This would never happened if clock were used. I heard that, and instead of taking advantage of the situation I agreed to play next day rather than winning by forfeit. Punishing this player who was simply a victim of tournament policies combined with slow play of his opponent just did not feel right to me. I am not so sure that EVERYONE would do the same thing in my situation.
What was the name of the player willing to forfeit his match with me to avoid playing very late? Well, it was you Steve. How would you feel if I didn't agree to play next day?
I am not one of those who would not play in a tournament just because clock were not mandatory, but don't this and other 'playing without clock' horror stories teach us something?
