Are you familiar with Magriel's safe vs bold criteria? If not, check this out: http://backgammoncamp.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/things-to-remember-handy-rules-and-guides/

Here, you're behind in the race, have more men back, & have a nice anchor. These point to bold play. The match score points to safe play, but the bold's outweigh this. Slotting is certainly bold, and any 1 or 7 plus 44 makes a full prime (16 shakes).

But I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have seen this play over the board.
