I assume here you are talking about the reverse score where the trailer is the one considering a cube. In that case then, yeah if he loses a lot of gammons anyway he can often double as a significant underdog.
There are still other positions where the leader can double as an underdog:

This is nearly a last roll position since blue almost always wins after a hit and is always cubed out after a miss.
