There is more to winning at poker than being good at the game. It depends on the table(s) you play at as well. If you are the 6th best NLHE poker player and you are sitting at a table with the top 5 players in the world and no one else, then you are a -EV player.
I think it really depends both on your ability to understand the game and also your table picking skills. I started out making money almost from the get go, starting with NLHE freerolls and trying out other variations as well (I enjoy O8 and Razz but an not nearly as good at them as I am with NLHE), trying all kinds of different strategies and learning to watch for betting tells and to disguise my hand, with a willingness to throw away AA vs obvious strength in order to win those freerolls. Then has simply been a case of recognizing the playing strength of the table, and varying your play accordingly. Another thing in my opinion that is important in NLHE anyway is learning to profitably play both tight and loose so that you can eventually mix up your game which in my opinion is the real key to the game.
Since then it has been a climb up it stakes, getting nowhere near where Stick is, and probably never will either, not to mention my limited poker variation repertoire. And if I had to do it for a living I'd probably be homeless. But to say it (i.e. being +EV to any reasonable degree) can't be done is silly, the question is whether it can be done by you.
I on the other hand have radically cut down my bg playing time since I found it way too difficult to make money playing bg except vs players who were obviously bad.
