You don't want to open a high point, so start with 6/2 for the 4. Then you end up with spares low, which is not good for the race. 6/5 does not help, so 1/off is something to consider, with the additional benefit of possible picking up a second checker.

There is an obvious immediate benefit from this play on a 21 return shot, but all hitting aces except 61 help the cause.

A useful variation is where the 3 checkers are on the ace instead of the 3. Then, picking up a second checker is a non-consideration, still 1/off is close (I checked this because I was curious).
