Daily Quiz 5 april 2012
Number 1
Any white 6 might leave a shot, that’s why I wouldn't slot in innerboard right now. At least this was my first impulse. On second sight I noticed the huge race advantage of white and I began to think that it might be better to let the eventual upcoming shot go, the huge race-advantage comes with a cost here, white lacks his 8-point. This suggests that more shots are bound to come and 6/4 6/3 might be best with a reasonable chance of building a 3-point board in a few moves.
Answer: 6/4 6/3
Number 2
One of the backgame strategies is turning a backgame into a nothing game. Blue can try that here: by making white move his 5’s and 6’es.
Answer: 6/5 6/4
Number 3
Here white has to endure only a few immediate shot after 43, 31 and D3 (creating 5% hits), besides that white will have about 19% hits on the clearing of the 8-point. It seems a good DT for me at first sight. Now I look at the score and ask myself, are there a lot of gammons here, in that case blue might choose to play for the undoubled gammon. Blue needs 18 crossovers, white 13, so the gammonchance is small, but not unthinkable small. I have the feeling that at a 0-0 score it would be a DT, but ats it might be a borderline case. I would say No Double.
Answer: nD
