The poker situation is a lot easier to figure out. I mean you could program a computer to play this moderately easily. Anyone could play it as a "hand rollout" since you (the expert) don't need to see your opp's hands until you call and opp has no decision to make.

The backgammon problem should REALLY be solved with a bot. The reason is that the non-expert has decisions to make and might even learn while watching his expert opponent. OTOH, it helps the expert if s/he knows the non-experts tactics as well.

I don't think the ELO method has ever been shown to fail (nor proved to work -- very hard :) in BG. But one wonders about these huge differences. Also, 1400 is an educated guess.
