Interesting. 43 pips behind, and an out of play spare on the 2 for White that would come to live if we give up the 24.

I think given the race, your first priority is to prevent the escape, so I start with 8/3* rather than 13/8. True, 13/8 creates a 5 prime, but it also mean leaving 6s to escape plus lots of possibilities to use White's spare wood on the 6 and 5 and possibly 2 (in case of 24/22, if you play 13/8 I think you need 17/15 to go with it though). Plus that after 13/8, any 2, hit, you may need to give up the 5 prime soon anyway or start burying checkers (too many checkers back).

After 8/3*, I'd play 13/11 OTB, but it seems that 17/15 reduces the number of return hits thanks to duplication, so 17/15 may be the better 2.
