Thanks (to you and other replies), studying epc a little bit I now understand that extra checkers off have no meaning in these kinds of long bearoffs, what matters is the wastage and as you point out it is almost identical so consequently you can use normal race guidelines.

It is however somewhat worrysome to me that the EPC take/pass formula ("point of last take") yields a wrong result (small pass), this suggests to me that one has to be careful when making a take/pass decision when EPC says it is close.
