Hi Klaus,
Thanks. Your kind words are appreciated.
"Getting Started in Hold ‘Em” by Miller is a simple, easy to read introduction to Texas Hold ‘Em. I enjoyed it and it is an appropriate book for a complete beginner. However, it does not come close to teaching all that is necessary to win online.
“Small Stakes Hold ‘em, Winning with Expert Play” also by Miller is the most disappointing poker book that I read. It suggests two different pre-flop strategies. Both of these strategies failed miserably. Besides the pre-flop strategies, there is some fine education in “Small Stakes.”
I did not start winning until I read “Winning in Tough Hold ‘em Games” by Grudzien. This is an advance book. Its approach to poker is based on the data accumulated from 1.5 million hands of poker. This is similar to how backgammon is perfected by Bots. The pre-flop strategies of “Tough Hold ‘em” are very effective. I also learned much about the detail strategies of heads up play.
“Internet Texas Hold ‘em” by Hilger is also an excellent read. It details proper street play with various hole cards. Very informative, tremendous explanations and voluminous fine points.
I did read Super System 2. This is an excellent study of many poker formats. The personal stories and Chapter on reading tells was most entertaining. I found the full limit Hold ‘em chapter to be poor. My last purchased poker book was a no limit guide. I never read it because my interest in poker had dissipated by this point.
In summary “Winning in Tough Hold ‘em Games” and “Internet Texas Hold ‘em” are equally excellent full limit poker books.
Poker software is not nearly as sophisticated as backgammon software. Poker software does not inform you of your errors. There is a right and wrong way to play backgammon. Poker play is more discretionary. Thus, errors and blunders are not identified. I wasted $125 on Poker Academy. It is best to spend a small amount of money on some poker game which does not purport to teach the game. Practicing with some type of software game is necessary to learn to play the game quickly.
Poker Tracker is indispensable. It records every online poker hand and provides detail statistical analysis of your play. It does not indicate errors or blunders. However, one can review in detail all aspects of one’s game tendencies. In fact, “Winning in Tough Hold ‘em Games” is based on Poker Tracker gathered information.
