Proposal for new variant, fleshed out some more

This variant wouldn't ever replace the standard variant, but would be used to distinguish between highly skilled players, who claim to be bored with standard backgammon.
Extensive home preparation is a feature of chess so I don't see that as a deal-breaker either.
But I think the real problem is that it's too asymmetric as I've described it.
There are various ways to restore symmetry, at the cost of less variety and longer playing times. For example, the players could play two separate matches. In Match 1, every position starts with Player 1's chosen position. In Match 2, every position starts with Player 2's chosen position. If each player wins one match, then a third match is played as a tie-break, using the standard starting position. I can't imagine having this format with any significant number of players participating in the tournament, though.
