AtS vs. unlimited score considerations

In Response To: CRB backgame series #22 (Stick)

This is in response to both of you (Daniel and Stick) as well as anyone who asked/mentioned this previously (Stick, maybe in a less interrogative tone). I'm glad there are still people interested in what I'm posting in this series and here are my thoughts:

1) Bottom line is "no, I haven't looked at alternate scores" (well, maybe I did once, -- it's been a long series).

2) I tend to try and post positions as close to reality as they occurred, particularly when presenting as a quiz-like situation (obviously not when posting 'variants').

3) Since this game was played at 4-away all, the players involved were presumably making their plays with that condition in mind. True, neither of us (particularly I) made all correct plays AtS. Still, the score could have (did?) affected the actual OtB decision. The fact that this has been a series of plays from the same game (where everyone can figure out what play was made OtB) brings this factor into more importance than a 'random' single posted position.

4) Because this has been a backgame ('proto-backgame', 'ill-conceived backgame', 'pseudo-backgame', ________________ [fill in your favorite term]) I've frequently used stronger settings than normal. I haven't studied XG's strength at backgames as a function of ply but if it's likely to get something wrong (especially at lower setting strengths) I figure this is the kind of game where that will happen. As I've mentioned my computer isn't nearly as fast as many here use and it takes a long time for these stepped 4-ply and full 4-ply setting rollouts. I'd be hesitant to then post a 'quickie' rollout with weaker settings after changing the score to Unlimited. I don't have the CPU time to do those justice given the amount of time I'm using for the 4-away all situations.
