What book is recommended for improving cube skills?

Beyond the books people have already mentioned, I think your friend might consider buying some books with interesting cube decisions in them. For example, there's Robertie's 501 Essential Backgammon Problems, Walter Trice's Backgammon Boot Camp, and Paul Lamford's 100 Backgammon Puzzles. Sometimes you have to take the commentary with a grain of salt and check the results against a bot, but after a certain point, you're better off anyway just exposing yourself to lots of cube decisions, and formulating your own commentary, than you are just passively reading someone else's theories about the cube.
