I'm in total disagreement with you. In my opinion the backgammon players who cash the most frequently in tournaments ARE the best. I also recommend that you and other backgammon tournament directors ask yourselves some serious questions about what can be done to improve attendance at backgammon events. If a seasoned tournament director such as yourself hosts a Florida State Championship and only 24 people attend ... while "thousands" are attending poker tournaments, then it's obvious to me that major changes are needed in backgammon. One change I advocate is ditching the Giants voting and introduce a performance-based worldwide ranking system ... as is done in golf, tennis, and now poker. It should also list the top 1000 or so backgammon players ... not just the top 32 or 64. Maybe then backgammon can attract higher attendance and maybe some corporate sponsorship ... fueling even higher attendance.
