In Response To: why not leave things as they are? (Ken Larsen)

1. Thanks Jason for the support and understanding. No question that Florida was a disaster and NOBODY had a greater loss from it than me. But itīs water under the bridge. Life goes on and I keep focusing on tournament organization and direction. Those who know me, also know that I constantly try to change and improve things, chasing the balance between whatīs good, whatīs necessary, whatīs fun and whatīs viable. For that purpose, I am in constant dialogue with bodies and people in charge in the US, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Turkey and other countries. The bitter pill is to see that some people focus and remember a poor attendance more than other facts related to me, such as putting up tournaments with the most equity and added money in the world in 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003.....

2. Yes, backgammon should have a unified body (but there is no real cooperation internationally, and not even nationally - only a handful countries have a national federation or association). Yes, backgammon should have unified rules (as opposed to what we have currently with ABT, WBA, WBF, etc.). Yes, backgammon should have a worldwide ranking system, based on the right parameters. Yes, backgammon should act globally in a more commercial manner. Yes, yes, yes, all ideas are valuable and yes again, should, should, should.

3. Facts of the matter are: A) As soon as there is a dime to pay with no immediate and transparent return, half of the community walks away. B)Everybody has great ideas and full of critics (destructive and constructive), but only a very few roll up their sleeves and become active and hands-on.

Pokerīs success is mainly due to TV. But backgammon and poker are different games and even if the thinking process is similar, they have major differences. Nothing more boring to a general audience (even to me as a die-hard fan of BG) than to watch 2 players moving checkers from here to there on TV. BG is transparent and everything is on the board. No enigma to the savvy players about what is to be decided and why. The concept of hole cards in poker is an information that the TV-viewers have but the players at the table donīt. That makes it interesting for TV.

IMO, much more than constantly looking over the fence and envying your neighbors from poker, the road to success for backgammon is consistency and perseverance, paired with the right ideas and lots of work. But the road is bumpy and nobody knows that better than me....
