Oh, I get it! We can (barely) hold our 5-prime by mega-stacking the 5-point, or we can give up the 9-point (allowing opp to hold his 4-point board with 5's and 6's, the latter which he gets regardless) and keep good distribution of spares.

The secondary (although maybe 'primary' is a better word) value of giving up the 9-point is that when opp next runs a single checker we are in very good position to attack the blot left in our homeboard. That potential is no small asset.

I see one more consideration: we can give up the 8-point instead of the 9-point, forcing opp out with 4-x, and in particular getting some juicy double shots if the roll is specifically 4-1. But that play could give us problems clearing our outermost remaining point. Doesn't look worth it.
