One thing to keep in my mind with all of this is that backgammon has lost a large number of players to poker. If attendance has not dropped too greatly, it is a credit to directors like Pat Gibson, Bill Davis, CJC, Howard Markowitz, and many others. If it were not for the emergence of poker, I think backgammon would be much healthier and we would see more large entry fee events and larger Calcutta. Many of backgammon's high rollers have either retired, died, or transitioned to poker. I believe the model for backgammon needs to be changed and I think it is being done. It is changing more from a gambling game to a social and intellectual pursuit. Finding a way to organize the 10'a of 1000's of players that play on the internet is a first step. I would love to hear suggestions on how that can/should be done.
