In Response To: Backgammon Ethics (Stick)

I don't want to seem like I'm picking on Phil mainly because I don't know him all that well, otherwise it would be open season, but his articles are the ones I'm reading through first. Instead of making a separate thread for all these short quibby things I'm going to toss them here. (and no, "quibby" isn't a word, especially in the sense I used it!)

Two Point Match Strategy - He basically states that any time you get an advantage you should double at -2 -2. This isn't exactly accurate. Any time you have market loss you should double, sometimes you should even double when you're the dog. Being a favorite in the game with no market loss means you have no incentive to cube.

He goes on to say that after an opening 52S 55A Fan "Many players will not double here, and play on to see if they can get a gammon. I don't think they should, do you!? In fact, don't you think it's D/T there?? I thought cubeless you have about 32-33% here as the guy getting blitzed. Must double.

Why I never complain about the dice - I agree overall everyone rolls the same and nobody wants to hear about your bad luck. What I don't agree is that when it matters everyone has the same amount of short term luck in those situations. This is what can annoy the living shit out of me as a poker player. Overall, yes, when I get all in with AK v. AQ I'm going to win my 72% of the time and not complain when I lose. When it happens at a final table and is the difference between hugggggggggggggge sums of money, you'd better believe I'm going to bitch and I don't care if you want to hear it or not. The same could be said for backgammon when you get to a DMP situation and the dice gods suddenly take over, apparently you're atheist and get beat down like a Gitmo detainee. In backgammon it's not as bad, because most likely I'd be facing a strong player in such an instance and we probably played a close match whereas with poker I could be against complete fish and be sucked out on.

How to play the opening moves - What year was this written? Without going into detail I take issue with how these rolls are presented: 62, 43, 41, 32, 21.
