“These decisions… do not depend on the exact number of return shots nor on wether you feel lucky and “wish to get away with” a dangerous play. They depend on the exact nature of the position on both sides of the board …”

1. Your Opponent Has Closed Points in His Inner Board.

2. Do You Hold an Anchor in His Board?

Intermezzo: At time I’m working through “The Matches Of Malcom Davies”. M. Storer has cited the Safe Play vs. Bold Criteria in the introduction. There, the term is “ADVANCED ANCHOR”. I think btw., this is a difference. I have found my copy again today (bought from Robertie years ago). Magriel speaks only from “AN ANCHOR” in the text, but from an “ADVANCED ANCHOR” in the summery at the end of the chapter. This has to be cleared.

3. Number of Points You Have Closed

4. Blot’s in Your Opponent’s Inner Board

5. Number of Men You Have Back

6. Number of Men Your Opponent Has Back

We are facing a strong block with 13 men already in place. Not ready to jump, we have to go to the edge of the block. By now, it is an outfield block and only one door is closed in opp’s house.

In the offense we have only 9 men in place. But we have two doors closed in our house. We can’t prime the advanced anchor. We are poorly equipped with only 9 men in the zone. Should we wait for even facing a stronger block to get something going? I think, this hasn’t to be played awkward and anti-positional. Now is the hour for some action on the line of scrimmage. I would play 53 with a capital D. Let us look for the SPvsBPC.

Only one door closed=bold. We have an anchor=bold . We have two doors closed=bold. No blots=safe. Two men back on the piece of…=bold. Two men back, but on the golden point with a race advantage=bold.

So Magriel backs me up. It isn’t the time to sit like a lame duck, making the guff. We just have to get something going. And if blue isn’t hitting on the ten, perhaps we are able to make a block. At least we are getting the midpoint unstacked, adding up two men to the zone.

13/8 13/10.
