In Response To: Best at explaining backgammon positions (Casper van der Tak)

This is far too subjective a subject to make sweeping generalizations. I guarantee you that I can explain certain concepts of the game to beginners and intermediates as well or better than Stick or Nack (I have taken lessons and worked with both and read much from both over the years). When it comes to explaining complex cube and checker plays to open players, I don't hold a candle to either of them. So it depends on the subject, and it depends on the audience, and even then, different people learn different ways.

Two days ago I sent a complex position and question to 5 people, three of whom were Giants and two that could easily be and certainly have the teaching credentials. I got 5 very different answers in 5 very different ways. They were all "correct" but all stressed key concepts in different orders and ways, and some included concepts that they felt were important, and some did not feel those things really mattered. It is IMPOSSIBLE to say which one did it "better." It depends on your point of view.

Having said this, Stick and Nack are certainly amongst the best in the world, and it's no surprise that I would also put Robertie, Magriel, Woolsey, Jake, Gartner, O'Hagan, Rockwell, and Kazaross very high on that list as well. I have heard Falafel and MCG give brilliant, sharp explanations of plays, and in just seconds Sly can pinpoint the key element of a position about as well as anyone in the world.

To try to "crown" a single person as the best is like trying to determine which flavor of ice cream is best. They're all great (except vanilla).
