Rolling Dice

In Response To: Rolling Dice (Bill Riles)

There is a worry as others have mentioned in this thread about the two main parts that constitute a random roll, the shake and the toss. Anyone can feel free to comment but I believe I both shake an ample amount and toss freely enough. I rarely have an issue with cocking the dice. It takes so little effort to direct the dice toward the part of the board where it isn't likely to bang up against checkers.

I've said that a million times before. The real reason in replying to this is nobody has ever brought up an issue with allowing a roll to stand assuming it lands anywhere flat on the board or on checkers. I don't really care one way or another but I take issue with any rule that's going to have someone touching the checkers not during their move. It happens now a little bit of course if a die gets rolled inbetween checkers we have to pry it out...that's always annoying.

Which brings me to my next point, esp. in clocked matches. Let's say I'm playing a clocked match v. an older gentleman at an ABT event, hard to imagine, I know. He gets low on time and since the 'flat on a checker' rule is in place I launch all my rolls into bunches of checkers. What I hope is that the dice wiggle between the checkers making it much harder for him to pick up the dice on his turn wasting valuable seconds. I lose even less time than I currently would because of the flat on a checker rule will allow my rolls to cock a lot less doing this.

I don't like people rolling on one side of the board. You get your space, I get mine. There is never a position where this is a real disadvantage, bear off or not. Learn to roll. This disadvantage is about equal to the 'extra weight we're carrying' by having a tennis ball in our pocket while playing.

Mildly amusing side bar. I played Ed O' in the consolation main over the weekend and he wanted to use a baffle box and I didn't mind. First roll of mine? Cocked!
