You may well be right.

Truthfully, it was a doubles match (last game as it turned out) and I was not rolling/playing. Perhaps I was glancing away or something and it was a simple forced bear-off play. So, peripherally, I was momentarily confused -- (like, that didn't look right) -- but the play was, effectively, forced and fast; my inexperienced playing partner picked up the dice and rolled just as quickly.

As typical 'famous last words', I really didn't think it would make much difference so I let it go. Before the opponent's next roll, I cautioned him to roll on the right side.

Before the 'wrong side' roll, we had 6-7 well distributed checkers and the opponents had 8 checkers -- 2 on the 4, 4 on the 5, and 2 on the 6. It was a good roll, 6-5; and, of course, it was followed by another 6-5 and then 6-6 for the match.
