When Should Intermediates Move into the Open?

In Response To: When Should Intermediates Move into the Open? (Prince Barlow)

I don't profess to know the 'answer'; however, it is certainly an issue continually facing tournament directors.

Generally, I think we will find that most intermediate players will move up of their own accord when they think it appropriate. If someone cashed a number of times at the intermediate level and did not move up, then I could not fault a director moving him/her up. I've also seen cases where one is moved up by popular demand -- as a perceived sandbagger. By pressure from the Intermediates and/or the Open players. We all remember the case in Las Vegas several years ago when Jona Alexander tried to play Intermediate and was forced, by popular outrage during the Calcutta, to move up to Open. And, of course, he won the Open. lololol

Money -- as in entry fees -- could be an issue; however, I think it unfair to make any exceptions based only on that factor. They're not going to let an obvious Open player drop down and play Intermediate because he/she is a little short of cash this week.

Personally, I don't care for the practice of someone choosing to play Open or Intermediate based on the perceived strength of the fields. One is either an Open player or an Intermediate and shouldn't bounce back and forth.

If a player has cashed in an Open or Masters event of note, I think Intermediate should be strictly off-limits. The tougher call is someone who has cashed, sometimes repeatedly, in Intermediate or Limited events -- when should they move up, or be forced to move up?

Obviously, in the case of pre-registration, a player should be advised before the event that he/she is going to be forced to move up. I think it unfair if someone pre-registered in an event, took time off, travelled, etc. to then have such a change sprung on them upon arrival. Tell them in advance of the tourney and they can alter their plans if they wish.
