I agree with the ruling, especially considering the rule quoted by Stick. But also when it is so clearly a misunderstanding.

Getting payed to the raise without showdown is not that bad for Baumann (who apparently were the chip lead of the table).

Even Gavin Smith cannot complain. He doesn't loose any chips he otherwise wouldn't have lost, had the hand not been declared dead. He can only be sorry that the hand wasn't mucked before his action, so he could have moved on the dead money in the pot.

There's really no way that this can be angle-shooting, unless the player mocking the cards do so, because he has obtained information about his opponents hand, before he is called... That clearly was not the case here, according to the detailed description posted.
